The Principality of Æbmark ( Danish: Fyrstendømmet Æbmark, Italian: Principato di Æbmark ) was a micronation founded on 14 March 2016 and it corresponded to the Prince's bedroom and its balcony for a total area of 11,2 sqm. The Principality of Æbmark bordered with the Italian Republic and the EU and it lied in the west-part of the Municipality of Milano, Lombardia ( Northern Italy ). The head of state is Prince Frederik 1. Nikolai - Federico 1. Nicola of Æbmark.

The Principality of Æbmark does not exist anymore, because of numerous, negative conditions. First of all, the area of the Principality and the number of citizens has not increased since the foundation (14 March 2016). Moreover, the Italian internal politics situation has worsened, following the victory of populist and far-right parties. As the aim of the Principality of Æbmark was, in the Prince's outlook, the spread of the Danish culture in Italy, and since HM Prince Frederik 1. Nikolai of Æbmark realised that it miserably failed, the Head of State unofficially declared the annexation of the Principality of Æbmark to the Kingdom of Denmark on 14 March 2018, exactly two years since the declaration of independence.

Here is reported HM Prince Frederik 1. Nikolai's speech at the Æbmarker national day celebrations:

"Dear People of Æbmark, dear People of Denmark and Italy, dear anyone who has been following the Principality of Æbmark during these two years,

History teaches us that States continuously grow and decade, an ineluctable circle that nearly involves each geopolitical reality. Another self-evident truth is that, as human life must have a purpose, also Nations, must have an aim. As you know, the purpose of the Principality of Æbmark was, at its foundation, the spread of the Danish culture in Italy and the establishment of a more intense dialogue between these three Countries.

Since none of these purposes has been realised, I, the Prince of Æbmark, must recognise that the existence of the Principality of Æbmark is now empty of meaning. Therefore, I declare that the Principality of Æbmark is to be part of the Kingdom of Denmark and is to loose its independence. Since now on, neither I, as Prince of Æbmark, nor my government, nor the Æbmarker law will have power and control over this territory anymore, but the Kingdom of Denmark. According to this unilateral declaration, the People of Æbmark are to respect the Danish law and the Queen of Denmark, Margrethe 2.

The Principality of Æbmark is not totally defunct, though. Nevertheless, I may affirm that the combination between the Æbmarker laws and traditions holds unexpected, enormous potentialities that - who knows - could reveal to be the starting point for another, great, future experience.

For the moment, I strongly believe that its simple, pure, universally-recognisable, fair laws has certainly made the People of Æbmark devoted to its tenets, which they will hold as principles of truth and justice for their future actions and decisions - wherever they will live - and that its traditions, perfect synthesis of two great, European cultures, will be observed and maintained vivid for the rest of the life.

I leave this glorious Country and its People in trusted hands, which will surely care the future of this small corner of the Earth for the best.

This is not a farewell, but a good-bye.

Following the speech, officially pronounced and ratified in a serene, perfumed, sunny, fresh springtime day afternoon (16th March, 2018 17h00), the Principality of Æbmark automatically annexed to the Kingdom of Denmark. HM the Prince resigned to the jurisdiction over people and territories, but maintained the honorary title "of Æbmark".

Etymology

The name "Æbmark" is the contracted form of the danish "æblernes"+"mark" that means "land of the apples". Actually in the County of Luftland there is a little apple tree that grows apples in autumn. Due to this symbological and economic importance, it has become the main national symbol.

History

FOUNDATION - The Principality of Æbmark was founded on 14 March 2016 by the current Prince, in order to preserve and spread the Danish culture in Italy. Since the date of its foundation, the Prince has been writing the constitution. On the 8 July 2016, the Prince's birthday, the first edition of the constitution was eventually published.

THE FIRST APPLE HARVEST - On the 22 September 2016 HM Prince Frederik 1. Nikolai of Æbmark decided it was time to harvest the first six, æbmarker apples. Completely biologically grown, the apples were very little ( ø 1,5 cm about ), though they were enough coloured to be eaten. This first harvest has been used to prepare the traditional, æbmarker national dish: the "Prins'æbler", cooked apples with melted chocolate and cream.

THE FLAG THEFT - On the 30 September 2016, at about 6.00 pm, the national flag, the Æblebrogen, has been stolen from the princely bike while the Prince had left it in Italy for a moment. HM proclamed the following day to be national mourning. The main flag on the balcony at the Fyrstelige Palæ was flown down at half-mast.

MUTUAL RECOGNITION - After a short briefing with between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Æbmark and the diplomatic authorities of the Most Serene Empire of Azzurria, the two Nations decided to recognize each other, and to strengthen the diplomatic relations since that day on: 21 October 2016.

2nd EDITION OF THE CONSTITUTION - On the 17. birthday of HM the prince, the revision of the constitution of the Principality of Æbmark has been ended and published on the official website. This new edition contains 3 new articles and abolishes 2 others. It also makes easier and shortens the way laws are proposed and approved. Indeed, since now on, the Parliament will have just to discuss and vote the project of law, edited by the interested Ministry.

TWO NEW RECOGNITIONS - On the 9th July 2017 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Ministero degli Esteri-Udenrigsministeriet ) have finally approved the mutual recognition and the beginning of diplomatic relations with two other Micronations: the British Empire and the Kingdom of Ourania, representing a fundamental building block in the international relations network of the Principality of Æbmark.

ANNEXATION - On 16 March 2018 HM the Prince of Æbmark declared the annexation to the Kingdom of Denmark and resigned, as a result of unfavourable operative conditions. Full motivation and HM the Prince's speech in the the introductory paragraph.

Government and politics

The Prince of Æbmark was the head of state by birth. However, according to the constitution, he does not have absolute powers, indeed, the legislative power is owned by the Parliament or Folketing-Parlamento (DA-IT), the executive power by the Government or Regering-Governo and finally, the judiciary by the Justice or Retfaerdighed-Magistratura. So, the Prince owns only representative powers. The Parliament is an assembly of members, who represent the vote of the people in relation with the parties' voting percentage. Vote for Parliament is held every 5 years. At the moment the only MP is the Prince, who is not however member of the current, main party: Konservativdemokraterne-Democratici Conservatori ( K ), that is conservative democrats. The Government is made by the Prime Minister (Statsminister-PMinistro di Stato) and 14 Ministers: Interior (Affari Interni-Inderigsministerium), Foreign Office (Affari Esteri-Udenrigsministerium), transports (Infrastrutture e Trasporti-Infrastrukturministerium), economy (Economia e Finanze-Økonomiogfinansministerium), job (Lavoro-Arbejdsministerium), health (Sanità-Sundhedsministerium), education (Istruzione-Uddannelsesministerium),sport (Sport-Sportministerium), research and media (Ricerca e Informazione-Søgningoginfosministerium), justice (Giustizia-Retfærdighedsministerium), dealings with other State organisations (Rapporti con gli Enti statali-Statsrapporterministerium), immigration (Immigrazione-Migranterministerium), security (Difesa-Forsvarsministerium), culture (Cultura-Kulturministerium).

Laws

The Principality of Æbmark owned a complete code of laws, so is a rule of law. Actually the constitution is the main element of the State that limits the Prince's power. Ordinary laws were contained in the Legislative Code, subdivided in 15 parts (one for each Ministry and one for extraordinary or constitutional laws). Laws were proposed by a Minister (after a discussion in a meeting with the rest of the Government, called Statsrådsmøde-Consiglio di Stato) to be discussed and voted at Parliament. If the Government thought it necessary, special laws, called "acts" (akter-atti) can be proposed by a Minister to be signed by the President of the Parliament, the Lord Chamberlain (Hofmarskal-Lord Ciambellano) and by HM the Prince, in order to set them valid immediately. Acts have, however, a restricted validity (6 months) and can only be renewed once.

Foreign relations

Due to The Principality of Æbmark's disbanded status, it is not a member of any international organisation and was not aligned to the Schengen treaty. As a result, you had to show a passport to enter the Principality. However, as the Montevideo convention states that a Country should have the capacity to maintain diplomatic, economic or political, etc. relationships with other Countries, there were agreements concerning food, energy, waste disposal, clothing and other necessary commodities in exchange for permanent immigration visa and free taxation between the Principality of Æbemark and Italy. Almost all of the Principality money and goods was spent and exchanged with Italian citizens, mainly with the Prince's parents.

Furthermore, post 21 October 2016, the Principality of Æbmark entertained diplomatic relations with the Most Serene Empire of Azzurria. On 9 July 2017, the Minister of Foreign Affairs signed the mutual recognition between Æbmark and two other micronations: the British Empire and the Kingdom of Ourania.

Immigration

The Principality admitted other people to become citizens of Æbmark. The candidate has to send a request of citizenship to the Prince, who sent the applicant photos and didactic material about tradition, constitution and history of Æbmark, as well as Danish language and culture ( for non-speaking Danish ) and/or Italian language and culture ( for-non speaking Italian ), in order to pass the CAT ( i.e. Citizenship Acquisition Test; DA: SET Statsborgerskab Ehrvervelses Test; IT: TAC Test di Acquisizione della Cittadinanza ). If not Æbmarker, one showed the customs officer ( which was the Prince himself ) his passport, since the Principality of Æbmark was not part of the Schengen area. The Prince's parents had a permanent valid visum, which allowed them to enter at any time, without showing passport. Otherwise, if someone entered illegally in the Æbmark territory without the Prince's permission, he was immediately expelled. If an unauthorized institutional representant or soldier/policeman of an other Country entered, it was to be considered as a declaration of war.

Military

The Principality of Æbmark owned a proper army, subdivided in the Air Force ( Flyvåbnet-Aeronautica ) and Archery ( Byeskydningen-Arcieria ). There was also a police force ( Fyrstelige Politi - Gendarmeria Reale ). The former Army and Police chief was the Prince. As the constitution said, the Principality should not declare war to another State, except in case of provocation or serious menace. The only weapons in Æbmark were a rifle that functions with elastic bands and a olympic bow with six arrows. There was also a little drone, parked at the Æbmarker International Droneport, located in the Municipality of Æblebed.

Geography and climate

8,8% of the territory was covered by plants, 17,9% by stone tiles ( in the county of Luftland ) and 82,1% by parquet ( in the county of Værelserland ). The whole territory was totally flat. The highest point was reached by the apple tree ( 2,47 m ). Thanks to heating, both in the winter and in the summer the temperature in the county of Værelserland ranged from 18°C ( minimum in winter ) to 32°C ( maximum in summer ). The only place where it rained is, obviously, the balcony ( Luftland ). Annual middle precipitations was about 920 mm. Temperature averages ( 1986 - 2016 ) was from worldweather.org, while temperature records ( 1949 - 2016 ) are from wikipedia.org. Temperatures and rainfalls were referred only to the County of Luftland.

Economy

The annual per-capita GDP was about 98.73 €/year and the total wealth is in continuous growth thanks to presents in money for Christmas and occasional pocket money. The only source of income of the Principality was the growing of apples and flowers, though the amount of production was irrelevant. Despite this, they were one of the fastest in GDP growth, as it has increased for 21,5% in the first year of existence.

Culture

In the Municipality of Æblebed, County of Værelserland, there was a bookshelf with about 100 titles, from geography to history, from dictionaries of English, German, Danish, Dutch, French to classical Italian novels. The two national official languages, Danish and Italian, were adopted in the Principality, and all the official documents, including the constitution, were written in both languages.

National Anthem

The Æbmarker national anthem was based on the same melody and text of the traditional danish patriotic song "I Danmark er jeg født" by Hans Christian Andersen. The Æbmarker version maintained the same melody and text, though changes every word such as "Danmark" or "dansk-" with "Æbmark" and "æbsk-". Furthermore, the substantive "Dannebrogen", name given by the Danes to their flag, was changed with "Æblebrogen"

Æbmark Intl Droneport

Transport

The territory of Æbmark could not host streets, airports or railways, so you could move only on foot. However, there is a small shelf in the library, where a little drone stayed. That shelf was considered to be the only transport infrastructure of the Principality, and was renamed the Æbmark International Droneport ( IATA: ABK - ICAO: LIBK ). Movements happened very rarely and only for leisure trips around the Principality.
